The Literaturwerkstatt Berlin is bringing some of the most important poets from Canada and Quebec to Berlin for the VERSschmuggel translation workshop. As part of the poesiefestival berlin, they will be coming together with German-speaking colleagues to translate each other’s works. At the end of the
workshop, the poems submitted by the participating poets should all be available in three languages. The poets will present the results of their translation sessions on 26 and 27 June 2007 in the Palais at the Kulturbrauerei.
In a workshop lasting for several days, poets will work in various pairings on interlinear translations and, with the help of an interpreter, produce new versions of their poems in the respective other language. This is a key procedure for poetry translation because it means that the poets are themselves involved and can work on the transformation of a poem’s complex text structure on the basis of sound and rhythm. The VERSschmuggel process gives the poets the chance to be appreciated in another language region. The texts will be published in an anthology next year while all the poets involved are featured on the poetry website www.lyrikline.org.
