Revolution, political upheaval, protest movements: the Arab world is on the move. In this discussion, writers will be asked about how they deal as artists with the current processes of change and violent confrontations. How are wishes and yearnings manifested in poetic forms? How far does all that anger find its way into their verse? What does the situation look like in the various different countries and regional realities? What role is played by poets in the protests – are they observers, catalysts, or even inspirations?

Rodríguez is one of the best-known singer-songwriters in Cuba and possibly even the whole of Latin America, and was the voice of the Cuban Revolution. Since the 1970s he has been famous not only for his songs but also for his film scores, his guitar-playing and his political work as a convinced communist. Dieter Ingenschay will be asking Rodríguez about his poetry, his music and his dream of a just Cuba.

Young poets and performers from the Arab world present their work and their view of day-to-day life. Beyond the usual Orientalism, a kaleidoscope of words will be on offer ranging from traditional poetry to performance poetry to rap. The many and varied voices of these young artists reflects the different realities of life in Egypt, Bahrain, Libya, Tunisia and the Lebanon, giving a richly-facetted first-hand insight into a heterogeneous region.
