Poetry and Conflict - Reading
Reading
Carolyn Forché USA | Bejan Matur TUR | Brian Turner USA | Ghassan Zaqtan PSE
presented by: Bejan Matur TUR
Bejan Matur is a Kurdish poet living in Turkey and is not just a writer but also an expert on Kurdish issues with the Democratic Progress Institute in London. She has brought together four poets in whose poetry personal experience of war, crisis and conflict is clearly tangible.
Poet and human rights activist Carolyn Forché witnessed the civil war in El Salvador and deals among other things with poetic language as it is affected by war, occupation, torture and censorship. Brian Turner’s poems are marked by his time as a soldier in the Iraq war. Ghassan Zaqtan is a Palestinian poet who experiences war and conflict in his immediate surroundings. The poets will be reading from their work in the original in their own languages for the 17th poesiefestival berlin.
German translations of the texts are available.
