Performance
Caroline Bergvall is presenting her Drift project. Its starting point is a real event in 2011 in which 63 people died and which gained tragic notoriety as a left-to-die-boat case. The refugees had set out from Libya in a rubber dinghy attempting to reach the Italian island of Lampedusa. The boat drifted in the Mediterranean for fourteen days and all its clear emergency signals were ignored by nearby shipping. In this work, Bergvall investigates the chronology of this tragedy using various documentary sources such as maps, photos and eye-witness accounts and closes the actual case artistically with an anonymous seafarer’s poem from the 10th Century and the Icelandic Vinland sagas.
