PRISM: The Worlds inside your mind – MEMORIES & DREAMS
FRI 13.10.23 | 10 pm | Kino in der Kulturbrauerei
Mysterious monologues on the soundtrack. Worlds of thought between abyss and contemplation. Memories, partly invented, full of postcards, animals and fragmented things. We take a look into the world of ghosts and tortured souls. And show poetry films as manifestations of boundless imagination, as a revolt against the absurdity of suffering.
Hosted by Ingrid Beerbaum
The screenings are normally shown in the original with English subtitles.
Unless stated otherwise, the event languages are German and English.
Please be aware that several films in some film programs include potentially challenging or disturbing content, which may trigger survivors of trauma.

Escape from the canyons of social housing. A trapped beetle morphs up a facade. Computer animation to a poem by Giovanni Baudonck – at first labyrinthine and dark, then organic, colorful, and light. As a dream-space traveler, a child breaks free from his life: “Up there I can be anything / up there / I am free.”

Split screen: a country road in fog. Author Catherine Boivin jogs along the road, fields pass by. Mirroring movement and perception. How running changes language. An approach to Boivin's ancestors, the Atikamekw Nehirowisiw: “A long time ago, / our ancestors walked this land / (...) / I run for all those / who cannot.”

Hiding under bedsheets. Unable to take it anymore. Ripping everything out of the dresser. Scratching the carpet with fingernails. A woman with goggles, curled up in a bathtub. Between sobbing and screaming. And a poem speaks to her child: “Would you crawl in beside me under the bed if everything became too loud?”

Frosted glass. Maybe a moon, or the world as seen from under the ice. A round disc. Above it: hands, feet, a face. The disc spins, becomes a record, a drum. Script, bodies, and voices in two languages. A stylized synthesis of the arts in four minutes, to a poem by Monique van Kerkhof about lucid dreams – dreams in which it’s clear that one is dreaming.

Accompanied by a poem by the Polish poet Roman Honet: “let me still dream of friends, / people seized on that lost day.”

A deer, a dagger, a cross, animated with just a few strokes. A waterfall, a fire. Ghostly legs stalk through the black-and-white. The only color is from the red moon. A meandering poem by Juan Martín Fernández, about man's invasion of nature – and his powerlessness: “You leave for an instant / and the jungle puts its foot on you.”

The sound of cicadas mixed with the surf. Marble steles, almost abstract. Like ghosts, translucent silhouettes between them. One ventures forward, half dancing, half animated: “There is a world of shade beneath shade, made of altered hopes (…).” Hypnotic poem by luvan about finding and resolving, cat queens and Arachne. Hades, updated.

To awaken to the sound of rain in an empty, massive building. Outside, the wet trees of São Paulo. A movie as a ritual, with the Mayan poet Edgar Calel. A poem, spoken in Kaqchikel, evokes ancestral dreams. Self-surrender, self-reproduction. “I don't know if I am a / person, an animal, an object, or a tool.” The days lose their names.

Summer animation, to a poem by Thom Wijenberg: sunflowers, airplanes, dangling legs. Flat figures, lying on their backs, are entirety composed of sea. Inside the house, there is that incomprehensible espresso machine. An old television through which two people run, lost in themselves. Seeing the evening approach, the light. Two minutes of the best kind of escapism.

Sunbeds are poised on a beach like game pieces. Cut-up cities. A globe is taped to a burning tree. Then: a cyberpunk street in Athens at night, and a skyscraper in decay, fantastically animated. “Inside it a sea is hidden, and the sand gets in my eyes.” A cinematic poem between night and day, labyrinth and eruption.

Flowing animation to a poem by Ross Sutherland, spoken word poet from the UK, about his stepfather: “Sometimes / I think the Sun / is actually the inside of our heads.” Laconic, funny and whimsical.

The inside is mirrored by a dark landscape: black water, black birds. A person-monster sets fire to everything. Locked in a tower, a young woman asks: “What is a man but a miserable little pile of secrets?” And would seem to escape from her burning dungeon to fly toward the moon.

An animation grows out of a woman's hair, folds of a dress that she removes, naked and free to wander through valleys of shapes. Everything around her is changing. Chanson to a poem by Andrée Chedid: “I erased Time / I have no age / I’m in the present / I face the unknown.” To jump and slide. To turn into a tree.

The chimneys smoke green. The wind is blowing. Two boots stomp past old industry. At Frank's Deli in Sudbury, Ontario, a pea soup yields to the hair in it. On the way home, people no longer have faces. Surreal, concrete animation set to lines by French-Canadian poet Patrice Desbiens. With death masks, snow, and full moon.

A human life, compressed into 3 minutes, told through the four dogs it needs to make it. One as a child, one as a teenager, one as an adult, and one as a pensioner. The last one survives his master. Small, virtuosic etude based on a poem by Piotr Grobiliński, shot on 8mm, Mini-DV, Super 16mm and CMOS Super 35. Sad, touching, and funny.
