Focus Italy

SAT 14.10.23 | 10.00 pm | Kino in der Kulturbrauerei

A film program is part of the national focus, Italy. With selected poetry films from this year's submissions, as well as the best Italian films of the past years, ZEBRA will present various facets of Italy film and poetry scene. Landscape, love, culture, tradition, and conflict are just a few of the themes. Films in this program are based on poems by Dante Alighieri, Gioacchino Belli, Elena Chiesa, John Giorno, Giacomo Leopardi, Milena Tipaldo oder Lello Voce. 

This program will be accompanied by readings, film talks, and a masterclass during the festival.

The screenings are normally shown in the original with English subtitles.

Unless stated otherwise, the event languages are German and English.

The work of the heart is the starting point of any revolution. Lello Voce’s motto, based on the slogan of the uprisings in Italy in the 1970s, is, “Work less, work for all” – a poetic-digital bag of tricks, baroque-expressionist overpowerment strategy, absolute poetry.

The news of her death surprises the director, at work on a documentary about her. Strangely majestic pictures of a city emptied by corona. Rome, the Eternal City, freed from the masses, shines like a living monument to its own history. Accompanied by lines by Gioacchino Belli, written in 1835 during a cholera lockdown. A monologue between mourning, cynicism and affirmation of life.

A town in Libya. Bodies in the desert. The poet speaks about his deportation by Italian occupiers, the fate of thousands of civilians in the 1910s. Propagandistic images are repurposed into a new narrative of the oppressed.

Hands covered in scratches in the midday heat. The blackness of the earth on which they are labouring, illegally and underpaid. Engaged and highly aesthetic film based on the interior monologue of an agricultural worker. “We will heal,” says the poem by Taha El Ouaer – chucking the tools of exploitation into a pile and burning them.
