Masha Qrella

The singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Masha Qrella (*1975, Berlin) is a musical chameleon, whose spectrum ranges from the instrumental post-rock of her earlier bands, Mina and Contriva, through the Talking-Heads-funk of NMFarner, to her various solo albums. In them, in the most beautiful way, she splices – simultaneously melancholic and transparent – folk with indie-pop, to create lithesome songs. Her English-language lyrics, sung with an entwined, almost hypnotically penetrating voice, connect the personal with the great motifs of pop, so unpretentiously and compellingly, as is rarely heard in Germany. She brought out her first solo album in 2002, followed by concerts across Europe and collaborations with various musicians. She composes film scores, makes remixes, and released an album of Kurt Weil covers. Her second solo album, Unsolved Remained, came out in 2005. Following up on that album she went on her first US tour with her new band. Her most recent album, Analogies, came out in 2012.
