Hoppe

Hoppe

Hoppe is one of the few formations that combines current German-language poetry with music. The poet and singer-songwriter Rike Scheffler comes together with Simon Bauer (double bass), Fox (saxophone, flute) and Claudio Puntin (clarinet).

Scheffler reads her own and other people’s poems, onomatopoetry, or simply dictionary entries, ably and with a light touch, at times dry, at times almost lascivious. The band plays with and off this, at turns improvised and through-composed. Text and sound are varied, all volumes and tonalities come to the fore. This creates collages of song, text and sound: word-music with a megaphone, kalimba contrabass, flute synthesiser.

Born in 1985 in Berlin, after travels through Vietnam, New Zealand and Australia, Rike Scheffler studied psychology at the Freie Universität. She publishes her texts in magazines and anthologies. She is also a cofounder of the Berlin poetry collective 'G13'. In 2012 Scheffler was a finalist in the 20th Open Mike.

She is currently studying at the Institute for German Institute for Literature in Leipzig (DDL), and is working on a book of poems, to appear in October 2014 with kookbooks.
