Lection & Talk
An evening of Yiddish poetry, music, and text-based art, launching a Yiddish reading series at the Haus für Poesie. Beruriah Wiegand (b. 1970) is a poet, translator, and lecturer in Yiddish at Oxford University. She has been writing poetry in Yiddish since 2000 and published several volumes, including כלת-בראשית / kales-breyshis (2018, H. Leyvik Publishing House). David Omar Cohen (b. 1994 in Utrecht, Holland) holds a doctorate in classic philology and has published Yiddish poems in anthologies and magazines. Cohen's translations of the Yiddish poet Mordechai Gebirtig, Mijn liederen/Majne lider were published at Uitgeverij HetMoet in 2020. Musician Daniel Kahn (b. 1978 in Detroit, USA) leads the acclaimed group, The Painted Bird, and is a solo artist and actor. Kahn is known for bringing klezmer into the contemporary era and for his translations of modern folk songs into Yiddish. Kahn will perform solo on accordion and guitar. Ella Ponizovsky Bergelson (b. 1984 in Moscow, Russia) emigrated to Israel in 1991 and has lived in Berlin since 2016. As a visual artist, she deals with cultural fluidity. Her work includes large-scale calligraphic murals of Yiddish poetry in public spaces, such as the project Present Figures (2021), based on poetry by the Yiddish writer Debora Vogel. She will perform her "hybrid calligraphy" live, accompanying the other artists.
The event will be held in English and Yiddish.
