Together with guests, filmmakers and poets, we celebrate the kick-off of the ZEBRA Poetry Film Festival Münster | Berlin at Schloßtheater Münster. We show a filmic vista of highlights and programme focuses.

Award ceremony

And the winner is ... Four prizes will be awarded by the three-member international jury, including the "ZEBRA Award for the best poetry film" contributed by the Haus für Poesie, the "Goethe Film Award" contributed by the Goethe Institute, the "Ritter Sport Film Award" established by the kind donations from the Alfred Ritter GmbH and Co KG, as well as the "Award for the Best film for Tolerance" contributed by the Foreign Office. Additionally, eleven films compete for the "Prize for the Best Poetry Film from North Rhine-Westphalia", contributed by Filmwerkstatt Münster. As well as this, the Audience Jury Prize for the ZEBRINO Award will be awarded, for the best poetry film for children.

International Competition

More than 1,200 entries from 97 countries applied for the ZEBRA Poetry Film Festival Münster | Berlin 2018. The programme committee nominated 66 of them for the competitions. Three prizes will be awarded by this year's three-member international jury: the "ZEBRA Award for the Best Poetry Film", contributed by the Haus für Poesie, the "Goethe Film Award", contributed by the Goethe-Institut, and the "Award for the Best Film for Tolerance", contributed by the Federal Foreign Office.

German Language Competition

The German-speaking world is known for its diverse poetry. Ten poetry films from Germany and Switzerland were selected for the German-language Competition. They compete for the "Ritter Sport Filmpreis", contributed by Alfred Ritter GmbH & Co. KG.

NRW Competition

Which German province full of poetry and film has three letters? NRW! For the second time, the festival takes place in Münster. Many exciting and moving films within this year?s programme are from the most populous federal state. Eleven films compete for the "Prize for the Best Poetry Film from North Rhine-Westphalia", contributed by Filmwerkstatt Münster.

Festival Poem

The ZEBRA Poetry Film Festival Münster | Berlin called for the filming of this year's festival poem "Endless wall-to-wall carpet (of the VIP foyer)" by Ann Cotten. Ten directors from eight different countries submitted their films. Four entries have been selected for the festival. As part of the screening, the filmmakers will give their audience an insight into the various ways of making a poem into a film. Ann Cotten will read from her work.

Focus USA

The focus of this year's ZEBRA Poetry Film Festival Münster | Berlin is on the United States of America. Selected poetry films will present the current status of the US film and poetry scene. Exciting film discussions, moving poetry readings and a lecture worth knowing will enlarge even further on this thematic priority.

Focus Spoken Word

In the music industry, video clips have been an established medium for the transfer of songs onto the screen for more than 30 years. Spoken Word artists use this format as well in order to performatively present eloquent texts. This film selection depicts the emotions and current topics affecting the new spoken word generation.

Rainer Komers: The Spoon Film

The poet Spoon Jackson was accused of murder at the age of 19 after a domestic dispute and sentenced to life imprisonment after a questionable trial before a court with a purely white jury. In 1985 Spoon began writing poetry after a poetics course in San Quentin State Prison. In addition to a telephone reading by Spoon Jackson from Solano State Prison, Vacaville (Bay Area), documentary filmmaker Rainer Komers will present Jackson's volume of poems "Felsentauben erwachen auf Zellenblock 8" and show his own work "The Spoon Film". In the film he approaches the birthplace of the imprisoned poet with his method of "landscape listenings".

Poetry-Clip-Gala

Through videos, words can go viral and slam poets can become famous overnight. Already in pre-YouTube times, a video format was developed for poetry slam texts, which inspired many slammers to produce their own clips: The Poetry Clip. Poetry Clips are audiovisual poems, slams in the form of video art and lyrical snapshots. The format was developed by the pioneers of the German spoken-word scene, Wolf Hogekamp and Bas Böttcher, who will present a collection of contemporary clips in turns with live performances. The Poetry Clip Gala will be interplay of moving images and stage with different lyrical styles and cinematic productions from low budget to high end.

Prism: Near & Dear

People are constantly facing new challenges and sacrifices, are lonely or even struggle to survive naked. But despite all ills, there remains hope and the love for another being, may it be an animal, to draw strength from.

Beat & Image: A Flashback and Flash Forward to the Poetic and Cinematic Hustle and Bustle of the Beat Generation

What drove the early representatives of the Beat Generation, whose poetic commitment to orality triggered a new wave of performance poetry in the 1950s, to the medium of film? Where are the intersections between beat poetry and its cinematic implementation? How do international filmmakers incorporate the poems of the beat generation in their poetry films today? This 90-minute lecture by Dr. Martina Pfeiler, followed by a discussion, invites the audience to delve into the cinematic and lyrical heritage of the beat generation from both a historical and contemporary perspective.

ZEBRINO Competition

The ZEBRA Poetry Film Festival Münster | Berlin takes children and young adults on poetic forays. What is a poetry film? Why making a poem into a film? What is a poem anyway? ZEBRINO shows filmed poems in all varieties for kids between 8 and 12 years of age, thus introducing them to the genre of poetry film. The programme presents award-winning films from all over the world: The young audience will meet a yellow whale, a shy monster and a boy with flowers growing on his head. At the end, they can choose their favourite film and thus determine the winner of the ZEBRINO Competition 2018.

NEW FILM GENERATION: Hip-Hop Poetry Clips

Hip-hop is so much more than chanting or simple entertainment. Hip-hop is a language of its own, it is self-expression via the medium of music. In combining text, beat and video, hip-hop is a unique and creative way to convey a message to a broad audience. As part of the ZEBRA Poetry Film Festival Münster | Berlin 2018, young teenagers produced their own videos in a workshops with Felix van Beuse. Their films will premiere at the festival.

Frauen*Kollektiv Panel Discussion

"Poetry 'n' Powerrr - The Role of Poetry Films for Women* in the Film Industry". In a panel discussion, the queer feminist women*collective Münster aims at encouraging an exchange of experiences with representatives* of various trades and clarifying the following questions: Why do women* seem to be better represented in the poetry film industry than in commercial film business? What opportunities and freedoms does this branch offer? Do hierarchies exist in the imbalance?
