Antonella Anedda

Antonella Anedda (*1958, Rome, Italy) lives and works in Rome and Sardinia. She studied Art History in Rome and Venice and, after completing her studies, worked as a teacher, university lecturer (at Siena University) and journalist (“Il Manifesto”, “Linea d’ombra”, “Nuovi Argoment”i). She has published poems and essays and translated the works of poets, Ovid and St. John Perse among others. She works closely with the journals “Poesia” (published by Crocetti, Milan) and “Nuovi argomeni” (published by Mondadori, Milan). Anedda is one of the most interesting voices in contemporary Italian poetry. The modern themes she broaches (human suffering, war and the fate of the world) give her poetry extraordinary strength and intensity. At the same time, she creates a link in masterly fashion between the tragic tones that can be heard over and again in her texts and light-hearted elements, between poetry and philosophy. She says of herself that she writes to clear things up, so that life reveals itself to her.

Milo De Angelis

Milo De Angelis (*1951, Milan, Italy) is an author and translator living in Milan. He made a name for himself with the publication of his debut collection of poetry “Somiglianze” in 1976 and he has since been one of the most important authors of modern Italian poetry. He has written six volumes of poetry to date.
De Angelis’s poetry creates inimitable excitement and energy without at the same time being rhetorical. It has a tragic, existentialist dimension. Transience and death are the themes with which he deals. The barren, grey ambiance of Milan forms the backdrop to his texts. His language can create a strong, lyrical flow. It is sometimes dark but always expressive. His poetry is therefore described as “neuphoric”.
He has translated works by Vergil, Properz, Racine, Baudelaire and Blanchot (among others) into Italian. He published the poetry journal “Il Niebo” at the end of the 1970s. He currently runs a series of the same name for the La Vita Felice publishing house.

Nanni Balestrini

Nanni Balestrini (*1935, Milan, Italy) lives in Paris and Rome. He was one of the co-founders of Neoavanguardia, an influential, avant-garde literary movement in Italy in the 1950s and 60s. The linguistic experiments of the authors of this group form part of the literary tradition of T.S. Eliot and Ezra Pound in both form and content. Balestrini was the editor of the journal “Il Verri” and co-director of “Alfabeta”. He worked for the Feltrinelli publishing house in Milan from 1962–1972. He was also a regular political activist: in 1968, he started Potere operaio, an organisation of non-parliamentary left-wingers and then supported the Autonomia movement in the 1970s. In 1979, Balestrini fled to France, then later to Germany, after being accused of being a member of a guerrilla group. His work regularly reflects the tension between left-wing optimism and governmental repression. He is a polarising class warrior and aesthetic innovator. Jürgen Schneider describes him as “a militant man of letters in the truest sense of the word”.

Bastian Böttcher

Bastian Böttcher (*1974, Bremen, Germany) studied Media Design at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. He has lived in Berlin since 2000. He is one of the founders of Germany’s poetry slam scene and is still one of its most important representatives today. For Böttcher, the writing and public performance of his lyrical works belong inseparably together. His texts must be heard in order for the intended effect to be achieved. Sound, rhythm and dynamics are therefore at the forefront of his poetry performances, with which he has made an international name for himself. Harald Schmidt named “Bas Böttcher” Germany’s No. 1 rap poet, while the FAZ newspaper said: “Poems and coolness suddenly sit together harmoniously so that playful and easy-going ways actually give rise to art – a far cry from a great deal of strained, foggy literary production [...]” In a bid to ascribe Böttcher to a literary tradition, the review positioned him alongside Ringelnatz and Jandl.

Ann Cotten

Ann Cotten (born in Iowa, USA in 1982) is the most outspoken of the younger German-speaking poets. In 1987 she came to Vienna and studied German, graduating with a dissertation on lists in Concrete Poetry. In 2006 she moved to Berlin. Ann Cotten was celebrated as a ‘wunderkind’ on the publication by Suhrkamp in 2007 of her Fremdwörterbuchsonette (Foreign Dictionary Sonnets). Together with Monika Rinck and Sabine Scho she puts on the ‘Rotten Kinck Schow’ at irregular intervals.
Her poetry is characterised by playful language experiments and clarity. “Ann Cotten ties up the traditional canon of forms in a fresh, new way which is also a disruption and tries to read the world and situations in a way that is as lateral to the norm as possible.” (Christian Steinbacher).
In 2007 she received the Reinhard Priessnitz Prize and the Clemens Brentano Prize the following year.

Stefano Dal Bianco (born in 1961 in Padua, Italy) lives in Siena. he has published three highly-regarded collections of poetry in Italy, which are remarkable for their mastery of form. Dieter M. Gräf

Dieter M. Gräf (*1960, Ludwigshafen, Germany) has been living in Berlin since 2005. He has emerged as an author of artistic, lyrical texts. His many-voiced poems are based around the world. They take the reader to Turkey, India, Taipei, the Californian desert or Ground Zero in New York. Illustrious characters populate the pages of his books and you come across such diverse historical figures as Malcolm X, Mussolini, the archaeologist Johann Joachim Winckelmann, the publisher Feltrinelli or even Pier Paolo Pasolini. An article about Gräf’s poetry in the "Frankfurter Rundschau" newspaper spoke of “complex textures” and of “high tension and verbal frictional heat”. The reviewer positioned the poet in German literary history as the Rolf Dieter Brinkmann’s legitimate successor.

Hendrik Jackson

Hendrik Jackson was born in Düsseldorf in 1971. His poems follow the traces of apparently unnoticed processes, making visible what perhaps only happens behind closed eyelids, in dream, memory and imagination. As well as working as a poet. essayist and translator, mainly from the Russian, Jackson edits the web portal www.lyrikkritik.de. He is also co-organiser of the literary series Parlandopark, where such writers as Marte Huke, Monika Rinck, Christian Filips and Steffen Popp have read and discussed their work.

Orsolya Kalász

Orsolya Kalász (*1964, Dunaújváros, Hungary) lives in Budapest and Berlin. She has been working as an author and translator since 1984. She is equally fluent in Hungarian and German. In her poems, Kalász plays with the idiomatic interferences of both languages and explores the possibilities of such a dialogue. Monika Rinck says that Kalász’s poems are evidence of “foreignness and the ability to live with this foreignness”. Particularly in her role as translator, she renders outstanding services to the exchange between Hungarian and German literature. Together with Gerhard Falkner she published the highly regarded anthology “Budapester Szenen”.

Sepp Mall

Sepp Mall (*1955, Graun, South Tyrol, Italy) lives and works in Merano, Italy. He has been writing poetry, prose, radio and theatre plays since 1971 and his work has been published in anthologies and journals.
He is a founding member of the South Tyrolean Authors’ Association (SAV) and is a member of the Graz Authors’ Assembly and IG Autoren (Vienna).
Sepp Mall’s poems initially appear as simple to understand and coherent in themselves, but there are dislocations between the words. Brackets and blurring diminish the voice, which makes it difficult to identify who is actually speaking. The reader suddenly hears sentences that no one has spoken. Mall reaches the reader by touching on the fundamental questions of human existence. According to the "Zürcher Zeitung", in doing so Mall is mostly interested in those moments in which “unresolved private matters come out into the open”.

Bert Papenfuss

Bert Papenfuß-Gorek (*1956, Reuterstadt Stavenhagen, Germany) has been living in Berlin since 1976. He was the co-manager of the artists’ local “Kaffee Burger” from 1999 to 2009. His status as one of the most significant underground poets of the Prenzlauer Berg district of Berlin is still unquestioned today. He was only able to publish limited texts in the days of the GDR. Back then, he was one of the first poets to read his works at rock and punk concerts. Papenfuß is well known for his unique handling of idioms of different origins. He adopts an essentially playful approach to language, which is both subversive and powerful, in his mix of argot, cant, slam and slang - presented either as a pirate’s song or as deceptively simple doggerel. The “Neue Zürcher Zeitung” newspaper speaks of his work as a “poetic deconstruction of the established order of language”.

Lello Voce (*1957, Naples, Italy) lives and works in Treviso. He is a poet, performer and pioneer of the spoken word in Italy. He has an international reputation and has been a guest at literary festivals around the world. His poetry is a fusion of influences from sound poetry and hip-hop. He works regularly with musicians and video artists. Voce’s poems are based on the sound of the voice. At the same time, he defends in his work the view that “the rhythm of the voice and the depth of breath” do not fit together without “thought, criticism and form”. He describes his art as “post-sound poetry”. As he sees it, he is a political author who needs “cultural traditions and literary experiments” “in order to criticise the form of current language and to create a new one”.
