Paulus Böhmer takes poetic stock of the world. He commemorates all those now dead whose path crossed his while they were alive – and celebrates life in a hymn-like canto. Böhmer’s poem is a large-scale poetic work which has been decades in development, a symphonic structure constructed according to musical principles. Within it can be found not only deep sorrow but also defiance and tenderness. This long poem has been brought to life on the stage by Sebastian Martin, whose scenic version engages with the desperate wish to escape death. In Martin’s production, the characters live in the hope of being able to banish death if only they knew its true name. The performance time becomes a lifetime, the time limit for a struggle, condemned to fail, against the overpowering enemy, death.
