One Lark, One Horse. Marcel Beyer and Jan Wagner translate Michael Hofmann
Lection & Talk
with Marcel Beyer (author, Dresden) | Michael Hofmann (author, London) | Jan Wagner (author, Berlin)
Between 1983 and 1999, the German-English author Michael Hofmann (born in 1957 in Freiburg) published four books of poetry before he fell silent. In this period, he wrote some of the most beautiful father poems in the English language (Hofmann's father is the German author Gert Hofmann). A collection of his poems was published in German under the title Feineinstellungen, translated by Marcel Beyer (DuMont 2001). Now, after nearly two decades of silence, Hofmann has published new poems in One Lark, One Horse (Faber & Faber 2018). The texts are close to his own biography: a self-portrait of the poet in middle age.
On this evening, three friends, three poets and three translators meet. Marcel Beyer and Jan Wagner will translate the same texts taken from One Lark, One Horse for this evening. Together with Michael Hofmann, they will compare their results and discuss their different approaches.
The event is presented with the kind support of the British Council.
