Lection & Talk

With the poets: Ulrike Draesner (Germany), Marie-Andrée Gill (Canada/Québec), Thunderclaw Robinson (Canada/Ontario), Hannah Schraven (Germany)

Hosted by: Daniela Seel (Deutschland · Germany)

A poetry film festival must also have live readings of poems by the people who write them. We have invited two times four poets whose texts are playing an important part in this year’s films. They will be presenting more of their work and giving us an insight into their very own worlds of poetic imagery. Not only that, poetry films from Canada are a theme focus of the 2020 ZEBRA Festival. Four guest from there will join us. They write in English and French and their poems have been translated – some for the first time – into German exclusively for the ZEBRA: Janet Rogers, First Nations Mohawk/Tuscarora writer/Autorin from the Six Nations Reservation in Ontario; Louise Dupré, grande dame of contemporary poetry from Montréal; Thunderclaw Robinson, slam poet and singer from Toronto; Marie Andrée Gill, who blends her Aboriginal identity with her Québec identity in her poetry. They are flanked by poet, novelist and essayist Ulrike Draesner and the poet Hannah Schraven from Berlin, by slam poet Dean Ruddock from Weimar and Kinga Tóth, poetry performer from Hungary, who constantly comes back to live in her adopted home of Germany.

Because of the corona pandemic, our Canadian guests have only been able to take part in these internationally mixed evenings by video. Nonetheless we want to question all eight writers across the Atlantic about what they are currently writing and about what poetry films do to their poems and what it feels like to see to see their own work transposed into another medium. Two German/Canadian ZEBRA nights of readings under difficult conditions: hybrid and high quality, with a whole lot of poetry, performance, films and talks.

The event is being held in German, English and French. All poems are available in German translation, and most also in English.

1st ZEBRA Night of Readings on FRI 20 Nov | 7.30 pm

The Canada/Québec Focus is part of Canada’s culture program as Guest of Honour at the Frankfurt Book Fair 2020/21 and is supported by the Government of Canada (Embassy of Canada) and the Government of Québec (Delegation of the Government of Québec).
