Poetry Talk: Souleymane Diamanka - Reality as a trampoline

Souleymane Diamanka SEN/FRA writer and Spoken-Word artist, talking about his life and work with Odile Kennel GER writer and translator.
Souleymane Diamanka was born in 1974 in Dakar in Senegal and grew up in Bordeaux. He comes from an oral tradition of poetry. His family are Fulbe, a formerly nomadic people living in Sahel region. In Diamanka’s combining of language and music, their rich heritage meets French Modernism. His texts mix poetics with politics, as though Baudelaire had been among the rappers. Diamanka is a showman and thoughtful language artist at the same time. He creates a self portrait in his writing that is as accurate as it is modest: “I am just a poor artist in the service of beauty. When I write I use reality as a trampoline.”
