Peeled off, overseen and thrown away. The hype sticker’s changing relevance in the light of digitization

Event-Picture: Peeled off, overseen and thrown away. The hype sticker’s changing relevance in the light of digitization

Talk

With Toby Cornish (Grafikdesigner Jutojo) und Tom Backström (Grafikdesigner & Illustrator)

The hype sticker… wasn’t that the annoying little thing on the outside wrapping of records or CDs? Always a little out of place, always misunderstanding the recordings as products? The hype sticker always led a marginal existence – and then all but completely disappeared with music’s digitisation. But in the course of the current vinyl revival, it has made a comeback and now looks better than ever.

And even if you’ve never really recognised the sticker as an independent entity: from the perspective of design and marketing, it always served the important function of communicating between the recording and the consumer. What role does this small sticker play today? What potential does it have in contemporary culture? These topics will be the focus of a descussion between Toby Cornish of the Berlin multimedia and design agency Jutojo and the graphic designer and illustrator Tom Backström. Tim Tetzner of the Stickers Removal Archive will moderate.

The talk will be held in English.
