Talk

The event is held in English. Admission is free. Application required.

Filmmaking requires authenticity on many levels. When choosing a tool to create emotional depth, enhance the storytelling and reveal the director’s esthetic vision, the truly powerful one is music. The host of the masterclass, Maryana Klochko, is a Ukrainian composer, performing artist, and a resident of Ukrainian Film Festival Berlin. She has created music for numerous Ukrainian full-length and short films, among which “Stop-zemlia” (2021) by Kateryna Gornostai, “Utopians” (2022) by Nicole Medvecka, “PLUS ONE” (2010) by Myro Klochko, and Yelizaveta Smith`s documentary “Break the circle” (2021).

In her talk Maryana Klochko invites participants to consider the role of music in film not just as soundtrack but as an element of the artistic craft and shares her personal insights on film scoring. Its key topics include the concept of (non-)diegetic music, explicit and implicit presence of music in the frame, specifics of music production for fiction and documentaries, collaboration between a musician and a film team, as well as presentation of some works from her artistic portfolio.

Filmmakers, music composers and everyone who want to deepen their knowledge about music composition are welcome to attend.
