Long declared dead, Concrete Poetry is undergoing a surprising revival. Forgotten positions are being rediscovered and the legacy is being remapped. At the same time, working with concrete material is more contemporary then ever in an age of ones and zeros. In the borderlands between literature, art, music and machine, the young generation explores and carries on the avant-garde.

11-11.15 am
The New Concrete!? An Introduction

Annette Gilbert DEU literary critic

11.15-11.45 am
“zur sache der konkreten” (on the matter of the concrete poets)
Eugen Gomringer
CHE/DEU poet in conversation with Michael Lentz DEU poet, literary critic
“Father of Concrete Poetry” Eugen Gomringer talks about the concrete poets then and now.

12-12.55 pm
Resonances: On the Legacy and Actuality of Concrete Poetry

With Thomas Thiel DEU curator, art historian | Georg Witte DEU literary critic | Bronac Ferran UK author, curator
Moderated by: Michael Lentz DEU poet, literary critic
The countless collection openings, digitalisation projects, reprints and exhibitions in the past few years show that there was never any such thing as a unified concrete poetry movement. Must the history of literature and art be rewritten?

1-2 pm
“Call it post-digital concretism”

with Hannes Bajohr DEU poet, literary critic | Andreas Bülhoff DEU poet, literary critic | Karl Holmqvist SWE poet, artist
Moderated by: Michael Lentz DEU poet, literary critic
Concrete poets have always been craftsmen combining media art with criticism of the media. What role do the typewriter and tape recorder play now? Is the book still contemporary? What aesthetic potential does the computer have? What does concrete poetry look like today and what critical potential does it have?

English-German interpreting will be available for the Colloquium.

The Colloquium: Arrière-gardes. Concrete Poetry Redux is made possible with the kind support of the Embassy of Canada and Pro Helvetia, Swiss Culture Foundation and ECHOO Konferenzdolmetschen.
