For the first time Kurdish poets are taking the stage at a German poetry festival. Kurds live in several different countries and are exposed to harassment, persecution and ignorance on account of their language. Access is often difficult from the German side. The richness and diversity of Kurdish history and culture are reflected in the many dialects and different writing systems. This Kurdish-German VERSschmuggel / reVERSible gives six Kurdish and six German poets the unique free space for an experiment, to translate each other in pairs in three-day workshops. Their starting material comprises gloss translations of the other poet’s poems, and interpreters support them with their translations, allowing them to communicate with each other. The results of their collaborations will be presented this evening.
